The Buildup to the Conflict

In this episode we aim to show how a new government in Afghanistan forges ties with the Soviet Union who begin extensive land and social reforms that were bitterly resented by the devoutly Muslim and largely anti-communist population. We'll show how insurgencies known as the Mujahideen started against the Government and how all-out warfare was about to erupt across the country.

In this episode we will aim to show how internal fighting and coups between the People and Banner's factions prompted the Soviets to send 30k troops to topple the short-lived People's leader Hafizullah Amin.

Stalement of the Fighting

In this episode we will show how the Soviets initially left the suppression of the rebellion to the Afghan army, but the latter was beset by mass desertions and remained largely ineffective throughout the war. We'll show how the Soviet troops tried to crush the insurgency by various tactics, but the guerrillas generally eluded their attacks

In this episode we'll show how mujahideen were eventually able to neutralize Soviet air power through the use of shoulder-fired antiaircraft missiles supplied by the Soviet Union’s Cold War adversary, the United States.

Aftermath

In this episode we will show what the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan has done to the country and the people and on what level it has affected them.We'll discuss how the disitegration of the Soviet Union affected the returning of Soviet Troops and how an accord signed with the US, Pakistan and Afghanistan and how the American training of the resistance forces would eventually lead to the creation of the Taliban.
